Mad Scientist Costumes + “Science Experiments”

This past weekend we held our 4th annual Halloween Open House. This year we established a theme for our home and our costumes. I knew an inexpensive way to stay in theme was to have a Mad Scientist theme. We had most of the supplies on hand and had very little that we would actually needed to buy.

I bought the lab jacket, goggles, and Mr. Woodsy’s wig (It’s a Don King wig). The rest we had on hand! We used rubber cleaning gloves as our gloves and I made Mr. Woodsy a simple orange bow tie that took less than 5 minutes. I used a hair clip to attach it to his shirt!

I also glued rats and an eyeball on to a piece of cardstock to place in our pockets. I didn’t want to ruin the coats since I  hope to use mine for future Halloween’s and Mr. Woodsy had borrowed his. I used a few of these rats and glued them on to hair clips which I wore in my hair. Those fell out before we had the chance to take the picture above! They looked awesome!

Mr. Woodsy and I thought it would be funny to make our precious little Lola our “Lab Rat”. This was a super simple costume that took less than 10 minutes to make! If you have a small dog you can use a onesie. I used a 12 month old onesie and our dog had plenty of room in it… she’s only 10lbs!

Using sheering scissors I cut off the snap part of the onesie. This gave the bottom of the shirt texture.

Next using paint pens and a stencil –stencil on the word “LAB”. *Make sure you put cardboard under the shirt so that the paint does not get on the front of the shirt. I used my cricut to make the “LAB” stencil. I then wrote “RAT” on the once onesie now dog shirt.

Lastly, I attached a few plastic mice and a spider to give it an extra touch.

Here is what our “Lab Rat” looked like. Of course she did not want to sit still for her picture…

I practically had to chase her around the house! This photo was taken by my friend Christy.

For my “Mad Scientist” table top I used a wide variety of glass vases that I either already owned or purchased.

Mr. Woodsy bought 25lbs of dry ice for $20 at a local carbonics store. This was half the price that our local grocery store was charging. He had to have the dry ice and I’m glad he insisted because it really brought our centerpiece to life!

We removed the ink portion out of highlighters to have glowing colored water. We found that pink and green glowed the best under the black light. The cauliflower head below is actually a pink highlighter… not orange! *This picture was taken the next day. Mr. Woodsy found a mirror on the side of the road that worked perfect for our theme. We also used a wide variety of flameless candles.

I used a head of cauliflower in my large hurricane vase to make it look like “brains”. Note to self and others… don’t let it sit in water over night. You will wake up thinking you have a dead body in the house!

We used grapes that were on there way to the trash can… Overnight they split and looked like this in the morning. These did not stink, so I think it’s safe to say that you could put these in water the day before. We aren’t sure if it was the water that made them split OR the dry ice OR combination. The grapes did not float they sank to the bottom.

Hope this inspires you to DIY your Halloween costume this year and if your having a Mad Scientist party I hope we were able to give you some inspiration. I am currently working on a video house tour of our Mad Scientist Lab. Stay tuned!
