As most of you know I co-hosted my best friends bridal shower last weekend. I posted about the Burlap Wrapped Mason Jars the other day, and today I’m excited to share the DIY beauty product I made!
I volunteered to take care of the bridal shower favors for all of the guest since I wanted something that would tie into our theme and also something that was memorable and that people would use. That’s when I remembered seeing a recipe for a sugar scrub in my favorite craft book, Mark Montano’s Big Ass Book of Crafts. If you don’t own this book–you need to go buy it ASAP. He gives so many great ideas as to craft projects you can make from gift giving to home decor. And did you know that Mark Montano has a blog! I also follow him on Twitter and every now and then exchange tweets back and forth (and then I become giddy because THE Mark Montano talked to little ol’ me)! I recognize that I’m a bit of dork and I’m totally ok with that. I know you have craft idols too. One of mine just happens to be, Mark Montano, and hopefully I’ll get to meet him one of these years! I digress, I remembered seeing multiple DIY hygene tutorials in his book that I immediately grabbed it and flipped to the chapter. That’s when I saw the Lemon Tea Sugar Scrub (that I bookmarked a few years ago in hopes I’d make it one day). I figured this would be the most practical bridal shower favor and best of all something that I think everyone would use.
Adapted from: Mark Montano’s Big Ass Book of Crafts
Servings: 5 one-cup containters
Ingredients:
5 cups Sugar
1 cup Epsom Salt
1 cup Lemon Oil
1/3 cup Honey
15 packages of Green Tea
5 Lemons, Zested
Juice of 1/2 a lemon
Measuring Cups – Soft Spatula – Juicer – Grater
Container for Storage – Twine – Label
1. In a large mixing bowl add 5 cups of sugar, 1 cup Epsom salt, 1/3 cup of honey, and 1 cup lemon oil. Mix well until sugar/salt mixture is moist.
2. Next, zest 5 lemons into the sugar/salt mixture.
3. Next, begin breaking open 15 green tea bags and adding them to the sugar mixture.
*This is what your scrub should look like.
4. Next, juice a half of one lemon and add it to the sugar scrub mixture.
5. Mix well so that everything is incorporated.
6. Once everything is incorporated I washed the jars, dried them, and created a paper funnel to scoop 1 cup servings of the sugar scrub into the jars. (not pictured) Once the sugar scrub is in the jar tie twine around the top and adorn with a paper tag.
Here is what my finished product looked like.
Everyone including the bride were smitten over this homemade beauty product. I also included the ingredients on the back of the tag so others can make more if they wish to do so.

Is it for feet? It seems way too rough to be for your face….
Mrs. Woodsy aka Katie says
I’ve never used it on my face (only because my face is super sensitive), but I have used the scrub all over my body and it worked wonderfully!
Mark Montano says
This is just wonderful! You rocked it. Dare I say you made it better than I ever could. Big hugs and THANK YOU for the shout out. Mark 🙂
Mrs. Woodsy aka Katie says
Awe, thanks Mark! Everyone beyond LOVED these DIY beauty favors! Thank you for the awesome recipe!

This sounds like a great ‘recipe’….I’m wondering about the olive oil that is shown in the pictures.. Was it left out intentionally?? Just wondering before I round up these ingredients! Thanks for posting this great idea!!
Mrs. Woodsy aka Katie says
Mark’s recipe calls for olive oil. I used lemon oil instead. You can use either or half and half and the scrub will still turn out the same. I know lemon oil is a premium item and you’ll have to go to a speciality food store, like Whole Foods to buy it. It’s also about $6 a bottle. Not sure if you really want to shell out the bucks for it.

How many containers did one batch make?
Mrs. Woodsy aka Katie says
I thought I included that in the post–must go edit now. This will give you 5 one-cup servings.

Where did you find these jars from? I know you said the other ones were from Walmart…
Thanks – love this idea!!!
Mrs. Woodsy aka Katie says
I bought the sealed jars from Old Time Pottery for $1.33 each. Hope that helps!

Thank you!

I was wondering if I could use avocado oil? Also, what would you say the shelf life is? I want to make these as a favor for my sisters shower! Love this idea!
Mrs. Woodsy aka Katie says
Hmmm not sure about avocado since it begins to brown as soon as it is exposed to air. I still have some of my sugar scrub and I made it back at the beginning of February–so with this recipe I would say its good for 3 months. Although if it sits for a while the oil and honey will separate toward the bottom. IN that case you just need to remix it.

I love the idea. I was wondering if this could be done with orange instead of lemon.
Thank you so much, Rita
Mrs. Woodsy aka Katie says
Hi Rita, thanks for stopping by. I’m sure you could do orange instead. I would look at a speciality food store to see if they have an orange flavored oil to add instead of the lemon scented/flavored oil.
Jill says
What do you think about using Grapeseed oil?
Katie says
Hi Jill, you could totally use grapeseed oil if that is what you have on hand. It can be a little more expensive than olive oil so its totally up to you!
Brenda says
In the picture of all the ingredients there looks like I see a bottle of Light Extra Virgin Olive Oil but I don’t see it in the instructions? Please advise.
Katie says
Hi Brenda- if you don’t have lemon oil available you can use extra virgin olive oil to substitute!
Ele says
Hi,
can you tell me about how long the scrub will be good for (smell bad, etc..) in a jar. I have similar jars pictured but plastic that seal. Also I am making 100 of then (I know sorta crazy), does that mean based on the above recipe I should use 100 lemons?
Thanks
Katie says
Hi Ele, I would say they would be ok for a few months. I think it depends how large your containers are. I was able to make a few scrubs out of one recipe.
Heather Hurst says
What a great idea! I will be making these for my niece’s bridal shower. How many 1 cup jars would you say this recipe will fill? I need to make about 20. Thanks so much for sharing this – can’t wait to try it with lemons from my tree!
Katie says
I believe it fills 4-6 but don’t hold me to that! 🙂 Everyone will love these!
Regina says
Can you tell me where you purchased your jars for this project?
Katie says
Regina, I found them at Old Time Pottery for I want to say less than $1 each. You can probably find similar ones on Amazon or eBay if you don’t have an Old Time Pottery near you.
Michelle says
How long is the scrub good for?
Katie says
I had mine up to a year and it was fine, but normally mine don’t last longer than a month or two because I use it all the time.
mariam says
hi, how do we place an order for those sugar scrub?
Katie says
Hi Mariam, Thank you for the compliment but I don’t sell the sugar scrubs. The recipe is available for you to make, though!
Syril says
Hi, Mariam.
I feel like a broken record. But for as many times as I have seen the lemon oil mentioned in these notes, I don’t see any mention of how much oil to add to the recipe and when.
Am I missing something?
Gotta try this for my daughter’s shower. But I want to get it right!
Thanks!
Katie says
Hi Syril, you need 1 cup of lemon oil. It’s listed in the supplies and in the instructions! Hope she loves it–everyone who attended the bridal shower loved it!
