Don’t forget to enter to win a Martha Stewart Crafts Jewelry Starter Set!!! Giveaway ends 6/10/2013

Last week, I shared with you my 12 Months of Martha Box for May! May has been all about creating customized handmade jewelry for yourself ad those you love. I was super excited to try out the new epoxy clay and since I received a package of post/earrings I knew I would make earrings for myself!

I’m the first to admit that making jewelry is not really my thing. I admire all those who make gorgeous jewelry but I just haven’t found time to really learn how to make beautiful pieces. That was until I received my may box from Martha Stewart Crafts. This new line (over 240+ items) has all sorts of items from beginner to advanced. I’m not gonna lie–I was a little intimidated by the clay, but after I put on my big girl panties and finally started playing with it–it was easy-breezy!

A few tips for working with the epoxy clay:

  • Always oil your hands before touching
  • Use the clay tool set to help you push your clay 100% into the molds.
  • Let it dry 24 hours

Had I really listened to these tips on my first experiment with the clay and I would have been much more ahead of the game. Although my project for Epoxy Clay Flower Earrings takes a good 48 hours until the end-result is complete it’s totally worth it. I think I might have spent maybe 15 minutes at most mixing the epoxy and clay and then placing it in the mold. The first time around I did not put oil on my hands and I spent more time cleaning my hands then actually making the mold! Follow my steps below and you’ll see just how easy it was for me to create a custom pair of Epoxy Clay Flower Earrings.

Mix one part clay to one part epoxy clay together. The best way to do this is by creating two small balls then slowly mixing them together. Then carefully begin adding them to the mold. *Tip: put a little olive oil on your hands so that the clay doesn’t stick to your hands and/or the gloves.

Let the clay dry for 24 hours and then pop out the clay from the mold!

Next, grab your jewelry glue and earring settings to adhere the settings on to the flower clay molds.

Dab a little bit of glue on to the clay then press the setting down. Remember a little bit of glue goes a long way! Let your earrings dry for another 24 hours!

There you have it! Within 48 hours you have a fancy new pair of handmade earrings!
