Painted Spring Pillow Cover

Painted Spring Pillow Cover from SewWoodsy.comI love to refresh our front porch every season; however, to buy new pillows every season is way too expensive. An easy and inexpensive way to refresh a space is to make your own pillow covers.  I haven’t made pillow covers for our front porch pillows since last year. When we started brainstorming for video ideas with our friends over at I knew that I wanted to make a video to share with the world just how to stencil a pillow and how easy they are to sew! This is a great beginners sewing project as well as paint/stenciling project.

Here is my complete video to share just how I created this trendy painted spring pillow cover:

So after watching the video, do you think you can create your own custom painted spring pillow cover?

As I shared in the video. Whenever you are painting fabric its best to use a fabric medium mixed into acrylic paint.

Painting via stencil helps you practice patience. You must be patient since stenciling does take time (but totally worth it)!

This is the first time I’ve ever made burlap pillow covers for our porch. I’m in love with the rustic look and how they turned out!

So do you like how the pillows turned out? Do you find yourself creating new pillows seasonally?

Disclosure: We have a working relationship with and are video brand ambassadors for 2013 (thus we are compensated). As always all opinions are our own.

  1. Love this project! Did you use a heavy duty needle in your machine when you sewed it?

    • Thanks Sandy! Surprisingly, I did not use a heavy duty needle to sew the burlap; however, if you have one on hand definitely use it!

      • I was going to ask the same thing! Wow, that’s impressive that you didn’t need a heavy duty needle. This inspires me to try sewing with burlap (I’m kinda sorta obsessed with burlap these days). Looking forward to sewing side by side one of these days soon.

  2. I love how this turned out! Very nice!

  3. Looks great. Perfect for outside. 🙂

  4. Ok..Katie…LOVE LOVE this! The chevron with the butterflies on top is ADORABLE!!!! What an adorable pillow!! Sharing on our FB page today! 😉

  5. That came out very nice. This weekend I had planned to do chevron pillows with some fabric paint and painters tape. Where did you get that stencil?

    • Thanks Jamie & Jason! The stencil is from Martha Stewart Crafts. Its part of a massive paper pack of stencils (and they have two different sizes of chevron stencils)!

  6. I love this pillow! I pinned it. You did a wonderful job painting it!
