Handmade Glitter Snowflake Wooden Ornament

handmade glitter snowflake wooden ornament

Last day of the 12 days of Handmade Ornaments. I would like to say that they saved the best for last, but I know otherwise–the ornaments this year have all be awesome. I wanted to do the 12 days of ornaments this year because I feel like every year I miss out to show off my talent. I knew my ornament was going to be made out of wood, and I wanted our readers to realize that an ornament can be made out of anything your mind dreams up. I wanted to also show that making ornaments can be manly!

Supplies:

I hopped on the Cricut Mini® Personal Electronic Cutter and found a snowflake I liked.

I fed the paper into the machine and let the  machine cut a few snowflakes for me.

Using the Cricut® Tools Basic Set I carefully removed the snowflakes off the mat.

Then, I traced the snowflake onto a piece of  1/4 ” plywood. I repeated this until I had a few.

I used my scroll saw to cut out each of the snowflakes.

Katie took this video of me last night cutting out the snowflakes.

I used a 3/8″ drill bit to put holes on the end of each snowflake to give it dimension. It also made it easy to hang the ornament.

After the snowflakes were all cut out, I gave them a quick sanding to clean up the edges.

Then I wiped off all of the dust and sprayed them one-by-one with spray adhesive. Make sure you spray them into a box. Spray adhesive can get everywhere!

Then wearing gloves, (because I hate glitter) I covered each individual snowflake with glitter. I repeated this with one coat of glitter and then sprayed the ornaments again with spray adhesive and covered the ornament with a second coat of glitter to make them really sparkle.

I tried to leave the edges exposed so you get that natural wood look to the ornament. I used paper clips and let them dry over night on a wire rack.

Tie on gold string and hang them on the tree!

Glitter may not be manly, but the way these ornaments were handmade and constructed with power tools is! So, what do you think? How did I do?

Oh, and don’t forget today is the very last day you can enter to win the Cricut giveaway!

  2. They are perfect! I am so jealous of your scroll saw! I need of of those! I think you did a great job on those snowflakes. My husband hates glitter too, he always ends up with some on his face or in his hair after I’ve been crafting around the house and he goes crazy.

  3. I love love love my cricut and use it all the time in my sewing room for patterns of objects. Never thought about wood though! Genius!
