FAQs
For durability and ease of use, try using construction paper, felt, cardstock, or even poster board for your base materials. Consider laminating any paper-based items to prevent tearing which will also allow the teacher to be able to re-use for future years. This is especially helpful if they’ll be touched often. Adhesive putty or removable double-sided tape works well for securing decorations without damaging the door. I also always bring with me an exacto knife and scissors for cutting around door windows and handles.
With sturdy materials and proper attachment, most decorations can last the entire season, even with daily use. Laminating or using weather-resistant materials can also extend the life of your decorations.
Yes, always ensure that decorations don’t block windows on doors, as this could be a safety hazard. Also, make sure decorations don’t obstruct any exits or emergency equipment. Always check with your teacher and school to make sure they don’t have any specific requirements.
Door Decorating Tip and Tricks
I’ve been decorating doors for over 5 years now. I have learned quite a few helpful tips and tricks along the way.
- Involve the Students: Letting students contribute is not only fun but also helps them feel more connected to the classroom environment. Try adding a “Thankful Tree” to the door where each student can write down something they’re grateful for on a paper leaf. Or have them design their own leaf. I always try to get the kids involved if I can!
- Plan a Theme: A clear theme, like “Harvest Festival,” “Fall in Love with Reading,” or “Autumn Adventures,” can make the decoration process simpler and more cohesive. Matching bulletin board borders or complementary designs inside the room add to the effect.
- Reuse and Recycle: Seasonal decorations can be reused year after year with some care. Try using templates and designs that can be easily refreshed or modified each fall, such as pumpkins that can be repainted or leaves that can be reattached.
- Adhesive: I like to use a mix of tape that can be folded over, double-sided tape, glue dots, hot glue, or even traditional glue depending on the size and weight of the items I’m adhering to the door. If I’m planning to reuse the items then I always try to use a tape that won’t damage the decoration once pulled off the door.
- Easy Clean-Up Tips: When the season ends, consider organizing a quick door cleanup session with the kids. It’s a good way to recycle parts that can be used again and to gently remove items without damaging the door’s surface.
Additional Ideas for Teachers and Room Parents
- Plan Accordingly: Make sure you give yourself ample amounts of time to not only cut and put together the design, but also 1-2 hours to install the door or bulletin board at school.
- Create Interactive Elements: Try adding a pocket or two where students can add daily or weekly notes, like “fall wishes” or “good deeds.” This not only engages them but makes the door feel dynamic and fun.
- Incorporate Learning Themes: For younger kids, incorporate alphabet or number cutouts with a fall theme (like “P is for Pumpkin”). For older students, add seasonal vocabulary or a “fall fact” display that ties into what they’re learning in class.
- Purchase Items To Save Time: Don’t be afraid to purchase items from Amazon or even the Dollar Store to save time. There is nothing wrong with having help from the store!
- Use LED Lights for Extra Sparkle: If your school allows it, small battery-operated LED lights can add a cozy, magical feel to the door display, especially if you’re doing a nighttime or spooky fall theme.
Sample Door Themes to Get Started
If you are stumped and not sure what theme to do here are a few examples to get you started!
- “Pumpkin Patch Pals” – A door filled with pumpkins where each pumpkin has a student’s name or photo.
- “Fall into Learning” – A tree with falling leaves, each leaf showcasing a learning goal or favorite book.
- “Harvest of Friendship” – Cornucopias filled with paper “fruit,” each representing a quality of friendship or kindness.
- “Thankful Tree” – Leaves where students write down something they’re thankful for, creating a community-driven project.

Be-Leaf in Yourself Door
Spread positivity with this uplifting classroom door! Featuring a white background, green roll paper for grass, and a dark brown paper tree trunk with branches, it’s adorned with artificial autumn leaves and 3D yellow daisies at the base. Bright orange cut leaves display positive affirmations for students to read as they enter, creating a warm and encouraging atmosphere.
We are Thankful Door
This easy-to-create door requires no die-cutting machine! Cover the door with orange roll paper, add a border, and use cut-out letters and turkeys holding signs. Have students write something they are thankful for to display on the door all month long, creating a meaningful Thanksgiving theme.
Thankful for These Silly Turkeys
Create a heartwarming and colorful classroom door by lining it with brown paper and adding custom turkeys. Each turkey showcases what they’re grateful for on vibrant feathers in green, red, orange, blue, yellow, and purple. Finish the design with the phrase “Thankful for these silly turkeys,” cut out using a die-cutting machine like a Cricut, for a playful and personalized Thanksgiving display.
Fall in Love with Learning
If you’re short on time or don’t consider yourself crafty, there’s an easy alternative! The 139PCS Fall Bulletin Board Decorations set, available on Amazon, includes “Fall in Love with Learning” letters, a fall tree, and maple leaf cutouts. Happy Fall Door
This door is perfect for the crafty teacher or room parents with a Cricut or similar die-cutting machine. Create a light blue paper sky, dark green paper grass, and add a red barn, tractor, and a tan pathway lined with little bushes. Complete the look with custom scarecrows featuring each student’s face and a festive “Happy Fall” sign. While the “happy” in the leaves had started to fall when I photographed it, you can still see the charm of this delightful seasonal door!
Thankful for Her Little Turkeys
For a fun and personalized Thanksgiving-themed door, try incorporating both the teacher’s and students’ faces! Start with a brown-lined door and create a hand-cut turkey, using a photo of the teacher’s face as the turkey head. Add feathers featuring the names and photos of all the students to make it a truly special and interactive display. This is a perfect way to celebrate Thanksgiving while highlighting everyone in the classroom!
One Thankful Tree
This charming classroom door features a white paper-backed background with a brown tree, scattered leaves, and pumpkins, along with the words “One Thankful Tree.” To make it even more meaningful, have the students write something they are thankful for on the leaves, just like this classroom did, creating a personalized and heartwarming display for Thanksgiving.

The tree is adorned with artificial fall leaves, and the phrase “Welcome to our Fall Patch” is cut from orange cardstock using a Cricut.
