I was going to share with you another kitchen post today, but instead my plans changed. I had a surprise shower at work today and couldn’t resist sharing a few of the details. This is also in an effort for me to do more “real time” blogging in 2014.
Like I said this was a surprise to me. I had a feeling I would have a baby shower at work (after all I did throw a few baby showers last year at work and over the past few years), so I figured I would have one. But as the past few weeks have crept up on us (I’m 35 weeks today!!!) I started having second thoughts that I wouldn’t have a baby shower at work. I was ok with that–we’ve all been busy and I know first hand what it takes to plan them. I even mentioned to Jon last week that it was odd I wasn’t having a baby shower at work. In past baby shower experiences we always try to surprise the parent-to-be. Well, my coworkers completely SURPRISED ME! And Jon never let on that I was having a shower. Not even a hint like “hey do your make-up today” or “curl your hair” “wear a fancy dress” nope… no warning, nothing. lol.
I feel like I’m one of the most difficult people to surprise on this planet, so the fact that they surprised me, made me turn red, and a few tears were shed–I felt the love.
At my home shower we had a whale theme (which coincides with the nursery theme) my coworkers decided to play on Jon’s day job. He works in construction in municipalities. So what fitting way to honor the new dad and mom-to-be than to have a construction themed baby shower!
My coworker made the amazing construction themed cake. I’m still blow away by this. This is a new hobby of hers and she has never taken a class.
Totally blew me away!
EVERYTHING on the cake is edible minus the signs and toothpicks! And how adorable is the pregnant flagger!??!!
Umm the rocks, yes they were edible and quite tasty. The brown “rocks” were chocolate mini marshmallows. The barricades were starburst.
And look inside the cake… a cute little blue heart!
That was my piece of cake that included a barricade, rocks, and a preggo construction flagger sign! So in love with this cake and of course the people who threw the shower for us. My heart is so full right now.
You might be wondering how my coworkers got me to the party room? I work for a publishing company and from time to time they clean out the library’s and have book sales for crazy cheap prices. I’m kind of obsessed with books and have been hoarding collecting books for our unborn child for a few years now. After all, I did request books instead of cards for our home baby shower to build the babies library. Our admin sent out an email right around the time of the shower about how the library was getting rid of some baby books and since we were all new parents/parents-to-be he figured he would let us know, and he got a special preview. Right there, I should have known something was up, but I heard free books and I was up and out of my desk before people could catch up to me! Everyone met at his desk and we were all talking about baby books. Everyone acted so calm and cool. We passed by the library downstairs which wasn’t too odd because normally book sales are in the facilities room, and I opened up the door and BOOM—SURPRISE!!!!
Seriously, tears in the eyes. I was so overwhelmed and really thought we were having a free book clean out!
After I walked in the door and the shock wore off, my coworker led me to a table where they TRIED to get me to divulge the baby’s name. Everyone was wearing name tags of what they thought the baby’s name might be. It’s the one thing we have kept a secret this pregnancy and won’t reveal until the baby is born. I was going to write “Zeus” which is what my neighbor calls the baby, but instead decided on “Ziggy Marley” and stuck it on my stomach. In hind sight I wish I would have gotten a photo of that. Then out walked Jon (which I saw him when I entered the room he was standing in the back by his mom who also works at the same company). Low and behold his name tag read “Zeus”. lol
As the shower wrapped up, I snapped a few photos of a few of the names my coworkers decided on.
They also had a calendar where everyone could guess what date and time the baby would arrive. Jon was the only one to write a date down in April… April 3rd to be exact. I told him if I’m a week late I’m not going to be a very happy lady! I guessed March 15.
I walked with Jon to his truck to put away the gifts and realized I never took a picture with him at my shower, so we snapped one in the parking lot!
I’m glad that my pregnancy brain has been in full swing and I was oblivious to the world, because my coworkers sure surprised me. My heart is so full of joy and happiness and can’t thank them enough for making me feel so incredibly loved today!
On a side note, we have one spoiled baby already.
